Ode to my Stuff
A Pagan Poem by Victoria
(Upon the recovery of 10 years of stuff on my hard-drive)
Oh moth-eaten possessions,
I know I should forget you,
Disconnect my heart
And cleave only unto
Unrusted, Uncorrupted,
Eternal things.
(Which I love, too.
I really do.)
But you, too, are nice.
And, after all,
You help me with all that,
Right?
Without music, emotions remain dormant,
Without words, memories lie fading,
Without photographs, past remains
Black and white.
Your lovely grey filling
Helps me define me
Here, where I live
Now.
Oh, Stuff.
I’m home again.
I wrap myself up in you,
Soft blanket,
Sweet security.
Maybe death scares people
Because they lose their collections.
I carefully collected you,
Choosing what is me in you.
My stuff, my identity.
At least for now.
I was lost when you were.
Glad to have you back.

Wow, very insightful! Good job Victoria! I swear that there's something in the Huntsville water!
I'm uncomfortable acknowledging my like of stuff, because it produces in me that fear that I will lose it/them because I am so inept at knowing how to keep stuff "smartly". As a result, I try to just tell myself that stuff doesn't matter! I got my files stolen with years of pictures of my kids with no back up. That's when I try to tell myself that it doesn't matter in the eternities, right? I'll be able to have a perfect memory then. That's better than pictures, right?... Just, nod your head and say "yes" to make me feel better. :-)
Lovely poem. All my aunts and uncles are such smarty-arties. It does make me want to make sure my computer is backed up, though. How does one do such a thing?
Verry Niiice! me like it.
Isn't it the truth. There is a lot of comfort in our belongings. They make a home.
Victoria,
I love your poem.
Stuff can be very much an extension of yourself. (myself, I mean.)
Your bravery prompts me to post my own poem.
P.S.
Glad you got it back!
Me too. Love, Mom
I enjoyed your poem too. Time to get a Mac?

losing my computer stuff would be soooooooo awful. it's family history and personal history and personal progression (cooking, crafting, callings. . .) it would be terrible. i need to do backup pronto. so glad it was recovered, and you are so talented. i tell ya, i'll watch your kids while you become a famous writer. really.
Wow, I'm impressed.
Vicky, This is fantastic. When you told me your story it made me want to sent every digital photo I have to Costco to be printed in old fashioned paper format! I'll get right on that. Should take about 1 million years.
