Let me first start by saying that today is a good day, again. Monday was a very good day. The girls played nice, I played nice, there was play-dough, painting, dancing, singing, lots of books, not much TV, piano playing, exercising, reading, a book on tape, a clean house, sunshine, laughter, and when Chloe went to bed that night, she said, "Dad, I am so happy!" It was glorious.
Yesterday was a bad day.
Why was it a bad day? Mainly because of one thing, which I swear never to do again ever in my whole entire life: I went to Kinko's with two kids. If the obvious harm in doing this is not ringing in your ears, let me add that I had about an hour's worth of copying, sorting, cutting, laminating and buying to do. (Further whining, ranting, and raving to follow.) I have not been given shy children who meekly cling to their mother while she runs her errands. My darling girls run and scream and push buttons and have no sense of stranger danger. (I've tried to scare them, believe me, I have.) They made a game of pulling all the pens, markers, staplers, etc., off their hooks in the displays. Chloe found a "pillow" (bag of packing peanuts) that she kept jumping on. A man next to us was trying to fix a copier, and had a large tool chest, mostly of sharp, pinchy objects which Chloe grabbed at again and again. The man on the other side of us was simply trying to make some copies, and Chloe kept pushing the buttons on his machine. (227 copies/color/double-sided/Copy.) Fingers were almost sent through the laminator. And I'm really glad I didn't see one of those reaper-sized paper cutters near us, or those near-laminated fingers would now be gone. Ellie kept running to and almost out the front door into the busy street. At one point, customers were knocking on the window trying to come in, because the girls had locked the door. I called Mike 3 times to come rescue me, but he was in a meeting. I held a squirming, sometimes upside-down Ellie on my side for the last half hour, while I tried to figure out how many copies of this do I need in which color and is it 1-to-2 sided or 2-to-1 sided . . . She thanked me by scratching my face. The cost of this, monetarily speaking, was about 70 dollars. (Emotional cost . . . ?) The kind salesperson helped me out with my two dears, my box of paper and roll of laminated cute stuff (10 square feet.) I thanked her, my gratitude (or at least need) was obvious. I caught sight of my red, agitated face in the window as I stuffed my goods and kids into the car. Never again.
We've run out of milk a lot lately, too. I can't face the grocery store. What was that story about the snake? (Ominous voice: "You knew what I was before you picked me up.") I knew I shouldn't have gone before I went, but then I thought, "Kate would just go and do it- it's no big deal." Well, I love ya, Sis, but from now on my motto is: DDWKWD. (don't do what Kate would do.)
I had Mike pick up pizza and cookie dough on his way home.

So Sorry! I hate days like that. And...Kinko's is a tough store for the little ones. I just had LD last time and he was a huge handful!
i laughed and cried. sorry you had a poopy day. but you give me too much credit. yesterday i told malan i was going to put her princess dresses in the fire if she cried about not having one like emmas one more time. and after enough nightmare days in town i don't take the kids anymore. it was too abusive for all of us. now i do all my errands on one afternoon and either hire someone to watch the kids or trade sitting with edith or wendy or wait for an evening when caleb can watch them. the bravest place i go with the girls is the library or the park. i even pulled malan out of ballet, so really, you're doing better than i am. can't you move up here so your gallies can come play when you have projects you have to get done? i know i'll be in the same boat (away from family) in like four months so thanks for taking notes on what not to attempt. sure love ya
Ha ha, I've done the Kinko's w/2 kids thing too...!!! It never goes well- too many pieces of paper and buttons to push.
Was $70 what it cost you in damages? Sheesh. I also don't take kids with me anywhere if I can avoid it. Can you invite Casey to view your blog again? Somehow, his link doesn't seem to work. He's casey@songerfamily.com
thanks.
BTW, I wan't to come hang out again sometime next week when I come to give Jenny some home DVDs.
$70 was just at Kinko's. I think all together it's around $100. (Aack!) Re-invited Casey. Would love to see you when you come down.
Victor, I did this at Christmas when I was copying my newsletter. I lasted about 2 minutes (already red faced!) and left to the car and came back with a stroller that Jack was strapped securely in. Yay for straps! Luckily my kids seem to submit when strapped in. I hear a lot of kids won't do that. But upon my return I ix'nayed the self-service section and had the lady do my ONE copying job for me. More than two jobs I would have never attempted with kids.
At our grocery store they sell Krispy Kreme Donuts in the last aisle. That is the bribe to be good. If they are bad, I eat the donut, and believe me if they are bad I really need that donut.
I was just trying to get up the nerve to go grocery shopping(with Isaac and Isabelle) and I am so glad I checked out your blog first! I am staying safe and sound at HOME!! I hope you have many more of those good days ahead. I hope I do too!
Yeah, try it with three boys! I felt the same. Besides spending tons of money, though, I also had to buy the candy that Luke opened after I told him that he couldn't have it!
I have to go tomorrow for Primary and the President offered to watch my kids while I go. Hmmm..she must have kids too! :-)
I love the raw realness of this story. Very good reading. I hope the pizza and cookie dough soothed your aches and scratches. I like you.
